Calving season is here — our most exciting time of year. After months of preparation and anticipation, we're watching our herd closely for signs of new arrivals. For those who've never experienced it, calving season is equal parts exhilaration and sleepless nights.
Highland cattle are known for being exceptional mothers and remarkably easy calvers. Their genetics have been shaped by centuries of harsh Scottish winters, where only the hardiest animals survived. This means they typically calve unassisted, with strong maternal instincts that kick in immediately. Unlike some modern breeds that have been bred for extreme size or production, Highlands retain their natural birthing abilities.
Our preparation begins weeks before the first calf is due. We set up calving pens with fresh straw, ensure our pastures have clean water sources, and stock our barn with emergency supplies just in case intervention is needed. We watch for the telltale signs: a cow separating from the herd, restlessness, tail raising, and the unmistakable "nesting" behavior where they paw at the ground to create a comfortable spot.
This year we're expecting 12 calves between now and early April. We're particularly excited about the offspring from our foundation cow, Skye, who's bred to our herd sire Angus. The pairing should produce exceptional confirmation, temperament, and the striking red color we're building our breeding program around. Several of these calves will be available for sale once weaned — perfect for anyone looking to start their own Highland herd or add new genetics.
For those following along on our journey, we'll be posting updates throughout calving season on Instagram @primalfarm. There's nothing quite like watching a newborn calf take its first wobbly steps or seeing a protective mother standing guard over her baby. It's moments like these that remind us why we do what we do.
